The Tea Party Express Rolls Through Washington
Posted by Terry L. Bradbury on October 31, 2009
Last night the Tea Party Express came to the Puyallup Fairgrounds in western Washington and was met by thousands of supporters who are clearly fed up with the excesses of our government. In fact the numbers were so large that they were threatened with the possibility of the event being closed down!
Take a listen to what one attendee had to say —

I wonder if these “Patriots” have a problem with big business’ involvement in healthcare? I mean, he did once say that reliance on big business, would lead to “subservience and venality”… how right he was. A bunch of moronic Americans calling themselves “Patriots”, sticking up for big business….. who, ironically, are not elected, do not serve the well being of the people, and are only concerned with money making.

I’m not sure if you heard what he said. Nowhere in this clip is there any reference to ‘sticking up for big business’ as you put it. This man is typical of the disenfranchised American who has been disregarded by their representatives in Washington D.C., and is trying to make their voice heard. I think you may have the same misunderstanding that many have: Republicans = Conservatives. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Unfortunately, you are not old enough to remember how good America and Britain had it during the days of Reagan and Thatcher. These were people of conservative principles, who emphasized personal liberty, responsibility, and opportunity. Sadly, since then England has descended into socialism, and the more it takes hold, the more irrelevant the country becomes on the international stage.
I think we can both agree that the Republican Party is way too cozy with big business. Unfortunately, the Democratic Party is also too cozy with labor.
I don’t know if you can see this from across the pond, but I believe a major political shift is afoot here in the States. The traditional two-party system is falling down all around us as conservatives see the Republican Party no longer representing their values, and many Democrats are perplexed at how progressives and the radical left have taken over their party.
There has been such a dramatic shift to the left in America over the last 50 years that Democrats of the late ‘50s/early ‘60s were probably further right than today’s Republicans.
I’m glad you took the time to visit my site and leave your comments. I appreciate the perspective, and I am also glad you are familiar with Jefferson’s writings (yes, I recognized his words even without the correction, but he was speaking of dependence in general, not just on big business). Let me leave you with a few more:
“The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”
- Thomas Jefferson
